Resist techniques used with rubber stamping crafts allows stampers to highlight light areas while covering a large portion of the design with a dark ink. The resist medium repells the excess ink and leaves a beautiful white design that pops out of the color. Resist techniques can create a subtle ghost-like image in the background or a beautiful contrasting design that becomes the focus of your art.

Resist Techniques Using Clear Embossing Powder

Simple Resist

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  1. Resist Techniques Begin by randomly stamping the butterfly Clear Stamp image on your glossy cardstock with the embossing ink. Sprinkle the clear embossing powder over the images, remove excess and heat with your embossing heat gun.
  2. Stamp the same butterfly in a dark ink randomly over the same glossy paper. It is OK for images to intersect.
  3. Using your sponge daubers and a medium pink ink, dab inside the embossed butterflies. This will make the images pop.
  4. Use a darker pink and dab ink around the perimeter of each butterfly until the background is completely filled in. You can create more interest by using more than one color in your background if you desire.
  5. Color in the dark butterfly images using your ink pads in the following technique. Before you open your ink pad, squeeze the top down as tightly as you can. Resist Techniques This will leave a residual of ink on the inside of the lid. Dip a small paint brush in water and add it to the lid of your ink. Spread the water around with the brush until you are happy with the vibrancy of the color. Simply paint in the butterfly wings with the watered down ink you have made in your lid.
  6. Add a ribbon around the paper and stamp a small saying or sentiment on the design above to complete your hand made greeting card.

How to do a Layered Resist Technique

Like the simple resist techniques this also used clear embossing powder. We used regular cardstock.

  1. Using white cardstock stamp 2-3 designs with embossing ink and emboss using clear embossing powder.
  2. Using a brayer, roll a light color of pigment ink over the entire paper.
  3. Ensure that the ink is dry and then stamp 2-3 designs again with embossing ink and emboss using clear embossing powder.
  4. Repeat step 3 as many times as you like, each time selecting a color slightly darker than the last.
  5. Once the last color is brayered on mat and mount the finished design onto your card making crafts
  6. You may choose to add a saying or sentiment to the front or inside of your card to complete the project.

Resist Techniques using Waxed Crayons

Wax Crayon resist

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  1. Make your design using your choice of clear acrylic stamps and pigment ink.Wax Crayon Reist - Step 2
  2. Begin coloring the image with waxed crayons. For the roses above color the leaves in mulitple hues of green. Press firmly and allow the colors to overlap. Color the roses with a light orange crayon in the places where you specifically want color. Once you have placed your color, color the rest of the design with the white waxed crayon. Don't be afraid to overlap with the colors and color in two directions to ensure that ink doesn't bleed into places you don't want it.
  3. Using a brayer (or a sponge dauber) apply ink over the entire  image until it is uniform. Strong colors work best with this technique.
  4. Wipe off excess ink with a paper towel or cotton ball and your image will pop right out of the card at you!
  5. Add a saying or sentiment and embellishments as desired to complete your design.
