The split negative technique is call such because of its inverse colors. This technique takes 2 rubber stamped images done in reverse colors, and splits them into a negative effect that makes strikingly beautiful card making crafts and scrapbook art elements.

On this page you will discover written instructions for making split negative cards as well as pictures of completed greeting cards which exhibit the split negative rubber stamping technique.

Instructions for Making a Split Negative Design

    1. Split Negative - Step FourChoose the clear hobby rubber stamp you will use as well as 2 colors of paper. Be sure that you have matching colors of embossing powders. Cut a square large enough to hold your image (the same size as your clear acrylic stamping block) from each color of paper.
    2. Center your stamp on a stamping block. This is so that you can stamp the image in the exact same location on each paper color.
    3. Using embossing ink, stamp the design on both papers.
    4. On the white paper emboss the design with the color. On the colored paper emboss the design with the white embossing powder.
    5. Split Negative - Step 5Be sure the two images are lined up perfectly and then cut them in half. Now the two colors of paper will join to make a complete design. You will have two images which are inverse to one another.
    6. Secure the two pieces securely to a piece of cardstock. Cut around the design leaving about 1/8".Split Negative - Step Six
    7. Place the white half of the design over the colored piece of cardstock. Be sure the edge matches up precisely with the division between the two colors in your image. Do the opposite for the other half of the design.
    8. Embellish, mat, or enhance your design to suit the theme or message of your card.
    9. Split Negative - Step 7 & 8Stamp a saying or sentiment inside the card to complete the project.
Decorate the other split negative image and you'll have two similar but stunninly beautifully different hand made, rubber stamping crafts ready to give and share with friends and family.
